36、City of Music A Vienna can justifiably claim to be the music capital of the world. There have been more famous composers living and working in Vienna than in any other city in the world. A visit to Vienna today enables the visitor to enjoy a profusion of musical experiences, from classical music to a vibrant jazz and rock scene. You could take in a concert by the Vienna Philharmonic, often described as the best orchestra in the world, listen to the sweet sounds of the Vienna Boys’ Choir, or follow in the footsteps of some of the great composers who lived in the city by joining a guided walking tour that includes houses and apartments occupied at one time by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Liszt, and Strauss. In Vienna, music is all around you. B Vienna, the capital of Austria, is situated on the mighty Danube River in central Europe. Because of its strategic location, Vienna has been a hub for trade and commerce, as well as being fought over by warring groups, for centuries. In 1278, Rudolf I took control of the city for the Habsburgs and that family went on to rule Vienna for over 600 years. Gradually, the Habsburg power and fortunes grew and by 1438, when Albrecht V was elected Holy Roman Emperor, they had become the foremost dynasty in Europe. Under Maximilian I, Vienna turned itself into a centre for the arts, and he founded the Vienna Boys’ Choir and acted as patron for painters, sculptors, and architects, as well as musicians. However, external threats continued to plague Vienna until 1683, when the Ottoman Turk armed forces were finally defeated at the gates of the city. During the 18th century many of the important buildings that we can still see today were constructed including the Belvedere Palaces and the vast summer palace of Sch?nbrunn, built in 1744–49 for the Empress Maria Theresa. C It was during the long and peaceful reign of Maria Theresa that Vienna developed into the musical capital of Europe. The ruling Habsburg family and the nobility provided money and patronage for composers and musicians to come to Vienna to work. The vast empire of the Habsburgs included Spain, Burgundy (now part of France), the Netherlands, Hungary, and Bohemia (now in the Czech Republic). People from all over this empire came to Vienna bringing with them a rich variety of musical styles and thus the city became a melting pot of European races and cultures. D Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714–87) was court kapellmeister (person in charge of the court orchestra) to Maria Theresa from 1759 to 1770. It was a highly musical court with many members of the imperial family composing music or playing instruments. Gluck developed a new style of opera in which there was a balance between the music and the drama, so that the drama is an integral part of the total experience not merely illustrating the music. His operas, including his masterpiece, Iphigenia in Tauris, are still performed today. E If Gluck was the doyen of Viennese musicians, the greatest genius to appear before the court was the child prodigy, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who first performed for the Empress at the age of 6 in 1762, and amazed everyone with his sublime technique and virtuosity. Mozart was a native of Salzburg in the west of Austria, but returned to Vienna twice more in 1767 and 1773 before finally deciding to make the city his home for the last ten years of his life, in 1781. In 1782, Mozart married Constance Weber and it was in the city that he wrote his great operas such as The Marriage of Figaro and The Magic Flute. Mozart obtained a modest salary in his role as court chamber musician but his extravagant lifestyle meant that he was constantly in debt. Frustrated by not obtaining a higher position at court and lacking popular success in Vienna, Mozart died a broken man in 1791 at the age of 35, and was buried in a small ceremony in an unmarked grave. F Just before Mozart’s untimely death, Joseph Haydn finally moved to Vienna. Haydn had visited the city many times before, but it was only in 1790 that he made it his home. Haydn is seen as the father of the symphony and string quartet, taking both musical forms to hitherto unheard-of heights of sophistication and artistic expression. He was a major influence on Beethoven and later classical composers. G Haydn briefly acted as a teacher to Ludwig van Beethoven when the younger man settled in Vienna in 1792. Beethoven soon earned great popularity and patronage from the music-loving aristocracy in the city with his new style of Romantic music. However, Beethoven’s public and private performances dwindled after the onset of deafness from 1802, and his works became darker and more introspective as the composer grew increasingly depressed by his affliction. Today the works of his maturity are recognized as some of the greatest achievements of humanity in the field of all art, not simply music. However, by the time Beethoven died in 1827, Viennese musical taste had moved away from Beethoven’s intense music to the lighter Italian opera exemplified by the works of Rossini. Nevertheless, it is estimated that 10,000 people turned out to attend his state funeral and this public figure, the Romantic artist as tortured hero, was buried with pomp at Wahring cemetery, in stark contrast to Mozart’s ignominious burial. One of the men carrying Beethoven’s coffin was Franz Schubert. H Schubert, the twelfth child of a family of schoolteachers was the only one of the great classical composers actually to have been born in Vienna. Schubert was, if anything, even more of a Romantic than Beethoven, and his music celebrates feeling and emotion rather than thought and reason. During his short life (he died at the age of 31) Schubert wrote over 600 lyrical songs and has been called the king of the lieder (German for romantic songs). Schubert often performed chamber music for groups of friends, but his works only really became popular after his death in 1828. He was buried near his great idol, Beethoven. I In the mid-19th century, light dance music was all the rage in Vienna and the most famous exponents of this style were the father and son, Johann Strauss I (1804–49) and Johann Strauss II (1825–99). Their daring waltz dances were based on Austrian folk tunes. The younger Strauss found great success touring Europe and America with this dance music, and consequently he became known as the “king of the waltz.” Many of these pieces remain popular today, including the ever popular Blue Danube. J Another great classical composer to make Vienna his home in the late 19th century was Johannes Brahms (1833–97), who moved to the city in 1862, and is often referred to as the true heir of Beethoven in his symphonic style, although he also wrote a number of songs and Hungarian dances. 19th-century Vienna also bore witness to the musical skill of the romantic composer, Anton Bruckner (1824–96), who moved to the city in 1868, and Gustav Mahler (1860–1911), who was director of the Vienna Opera for ten years. K In the early years of the 20th century the so-called Second Viennese School emerged with the rise of modern composers, Arnold Sch?nberg (1874–1935), Anton von Webern (1883–1945), and Alban Berg (1885–1935). Their music was considered difficult and challenging by many people at the time and therefore was not well-received in Vienna, but their work is now seen as laying the foundations for much serious modern music.
