In 2014, Priceline.com announced that it will invest $500 million in this company to broaden the companies’ options in China. Priceline and Ctrip, which have had a commercial partnership since 2012, will increase their cross-promotion of each company’s hotel inventory and other travel services. In 2015, Booking Holdings (formerly The Priceline Group) announced it would be investing an additional $250 million in this company. In 2016, this company acquired Skyscanner for £1.4 billion. In 2017, Ctrip acquired Trip.com, rebranding it as its global brand website. In 2018, Ctrip launched TrainPal, an online ticketing platform featuring split ticketing, in the United Kingdom. Accredited by the National Rail of the UK, TrainPal mainly provides services for the UK, and other European countries. In 2019, Ctrip completed a share exchange with Naspers and became the single largest shareholder of MakeMyTrip. At its 2019 annual general meeting of shareholders, it was approved to change the company name from “Ctrip.com International, Ltd.” to “Trip.com Group Limited”. However, in 2020, this leading online travel agency reported 1.5 billion yuan loss from operations in the first quarter of this year due to the impact of COVID-19. The group reported net revenue of 4.7 billion yuan from January to March, dropping 42 percent from the same period last year, according to its financial report. This company’s results for the first quarter of 2020 have been significantly and negatively impacted by COVID-19, which drove a significant decline in travel demand resulting in reservation cancellations and reduced new orders, said the report. The group’s accommodation business was mostly hit with reservation revenue in Q1 dropping 62 percent year-on-year to 1.2 billion yuan. Transportation ticketing revenue, packaged-tour revenue and corporate travel revenue in Q1 witnessed year-on-year decreases of 29 percent, 50 percent and 47 percent, respectively. “The COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant challenges to the global travel industry. However, we have seen stabilization or recovery of travel activities in many of the markets where we operate,” said James Liang, executive chairman of the group. “In China, travel activities hit bottom in February and have since been consistently on a recovery track. We have full confidence that the industry will return and reach new high as the pandemic recedes.” According to this company, tourism consumption gradually warms up as the country enters the stage of regular epidemic prevention and control.
